In mark World Emoji Day today, some of the latest emojis that come in smartphones later this year receive our first formal review. Emojipedia has compiled several emoji designs for iOS and Android, and 9to5Google has some more details on Android designs.
Belonging to Apples you can see some of the new emoji: a knight, an all-gender-character, a coin (which has “Crazy Ones” on the top), a bubble tea, a dodo and a piñata. Also, there are a couple of lungs and an emoji called by Unicode an “anatomic heart” to differentiate from the traditional emoji of the heart.
Yeah, and we got our first look at the new “pinched eyes” emoji from Apple too. Emojipedia notes that since the first announcement was made, many people immediately named the “Italian Side,” but BBC News has a rundown of the other different uses of the side symbol around the world.
In the meantime, Google says that its animal emoji this year have spent a lot of time talking on 9to5Google and that everyone who was a fan of the classic turtle logo of Google from 2013 is good news. The gentle turtle is used by Google over the last two years, but now Emojipedia reports that it has been going back to its origins with the snake, hatching chick, and pig.

While Google is following the path in the cartoon of all of its animal emoji, the company said it is partnering with both the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Victoria Bug Zoo to provide its animals with a “more realistic feel.” See 9to5Google for more.

Back in January Unicode released the 117 emoji this year, with 62 new additions and 55 new versions of gender and skin tone. They usually get a big release in the second half of the year when new android operating systems releases roll out, but 9to5Google noted that, if you run the Android 11 Beta and latest GbV demo, you can view and submit some of Android’s new designs already.
